Prince William and his new bride Kate Middleton recently left for a secluded honeymoon on an island along the Indian Ocean. Sounds romantic doesn't it? We commoners may be unable to rent or lease an entire island, but vacationing on one can actually be an affordable option. Additionally, there are several islands along the East Coast and Midwest regions of the United States.
Mackinaw Island in Michigan
Located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Mackinaw Island is an extremely popular destination. With its historic parks and landmarks, horse drawn carriages and complete absence of all automobiles and other motor vehicles, your mind is sure to take you back in time. Along with just lounging around on the island, you can also enjoy various leisure activities like golfing, hiking, bike riding, shopping and ballroom dancing. The island also offers fun treats and eats like homemade fudge, ice cream, brats and hot dogs. Mackinaw Island can be accessed via ferry from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City, or by air taxi.
Tilghman Island in Maryland
Just a twenty minute drive from St. Michael's, Tilghman Island is an ideal venue for a couple's getaway. Enjoy water sports, sailing, fishing or just taking in the many picturesque views around the Chesapeake Bay. In town you can enjoy fine dining, shopping or sightseeing. Tilghman Island can be easily reached by bridge or tunnel.
Madeline Island in Wisconsin
On the shores of Lake Superior, Madeline Island is a good choice for couples who appreciate camping and outdoor activities like swimming, golfing, hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating. At dusk you two can enjoy a wonderful dinner lakeside, or live musical entertainment while eating at a local bar or pub. Madeline Island is accessed via ferry. Cars and bicycles can also be transported over to the island. Madeline Island is in northern Wisconsin about a half hour from the city of Ashland.
Mount Desert Island in Maine
Another island on the east coast of the United States, Mount Desert Island sits amongst the splendor of Acadia National Park. In addition to memorable mountain views, many activities and sites await you at this vacation destination.
