A weekend getaway or mini-vacation makes for a wonderful Father's Day gift. Consider some of the following trip ideas for a special holiday celebration.

Father's Day 2009 will be celebrated on June 21. One way to celebrate this special day is with a weekend getaway. Following are several suggestions for a special Father's Day vacation.

Father's Day and Fishing Excursions

If dad is a fisherman, consider taking him away on a fishing trip for the weekend. Some popular spots to consider in the Northeast include:

Lake Erie—During Father’s Day weekend one can fish along Lake Erie for either walleye or trout. Some popular fishing spots are Northeastern Ohio (Geneva or Sandusky), Western New York (Buffalo and other cities) or Pennsylvania (around Erie).

Lake Michigan— Another wonderful spot for fishing in the Northeast is along Lake Michigan. During Father’s Day weekend fishermen will enjoy fishing for both salmon and trout. Some popular fishing spots include Chicago, West Michigan (Muskegon, Grand Haven or Ludington) and Eastern Wisconsin (Sheboygan or Milwaukee).

Other hot fishing spots are the St. Paul/Minneapolis area (the Mississippi River), the Wisconsin Dells (the Wisconsin River) and the Detroit area (the Detroit River).

A Father's Day Golfing Weekend

For many dads, nothing can be better than a weekend of golfing. Although there are many wonderful golf spots in the Northeast, a few stand above the rest for a Father's Day getaway.

University Golf Courses— Several universities throughout the Northeast offer some of the best golfing experiences. Some top university courses include: Purdue University (Birck Boilermaker Course), University of Wisconsin (University Ridge Course), Ohio State University (the Scarlet Course) or Michigan State University (Forest Akers Golf Course).

Golf Resorts— Choosing a golf resort is a great option for a dad who might enjoy golfing but would also appreciate other activities. Some resorts to consider include: Riverside Casino and Golf Resort in Iowa or the Belterra Casino Resort and Spa in Indiana (for the dad who enjoys both golfing and a little gambling), and French Lick Resort also in Indiana or the American Club in Wisconsin (for the dad who appreciates a little pampering and extreme luxury).

Popular Golf Cities— Another option is to visit a popular golf city (that is one with lots of quality golf courses) such as Traverse City (Michigan), Syracuse/Rochester (New York), Chicago (Illinois) or Minneapolis (Minnesota).

A Father's Day Get-Away for the History Buff

Whether looking to visit the Midwest or an historical city on the East Coast, the Northeast portion of the United States offers many enjoyable activities for the history lover. Some cities to visit that are rich in history include Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, New York City and Gettysburg.

With just a little planning, this Father's Day can be one that will forever be remembered.
